Winter's Lie

by Angela Easterling

about

"Winter's Lie" was recorded in the most recent sessions for my 2015 album, "Common Law Wife". It was one of my favorite songs on the album and it pained me to leave it off, but I felt like it just didn't fit in with the overall tone of the rest of the songs. I decide to give it it's own release, in wintertime, since that is the main image in the song.

I wrote this song as two dear friends of mine were going through a painful divorce. It was hard to see, and reminded me of in wintertime, when the snow falls, everything looks so perfect and beautiful, but then it melts away, like it was never even there. It gets trampled and dirty. But even in the frozen darkness there is still hope, in the painful and beautiful process of letting go.

Lyrics:
Last year the snow fell down, we woke to a world we found,
Like a fairy tale, glittered all around.
But the sun will melt, and the things you felt,
They will pool, at your feet, on the ground

CHORUS
Winter’s Lie, it’s a hard life.
But I close my eyes and I can fly.

My first white Christmas Day, I brushed my hurt away,
Took the hand that he placed in mine.
But December’s warm this year, I feel that old knowing fear,
If it ain’t cold, why this chill, in my spine?

CHORUS

So I tried to make an Angel
I laid my body down in white,
There I left a shape of me
As close to God as I could be,
It was frozen in my mind
But it’s a lie…

Well, I’ve been here before, I’ve learned how to shut that door,
When you know, he don’t love you, anymore.
Cracks in the ice below, tears on the Man of Snow
And no magic, to revive him, that I know.
