As a mother and as an American, I am heartsick over the endless cycle of gun violence in this country. I was pregnant with my now 9-year-old when Sandy Hook happened, and I remember thinking, “Surely by the time my child is in school, things will have changed.” He is going into 4th Grade this year, and they only seem to have gotten worse. I feel so much anger and hopelessness. I worry every day sending my children to school. We live down the street from a fire station and a church, and every time there is one of these mass shootings, they lower their flags to half-staff. It has started to seem like they are “Halfway Down” all the time.
