I love Bluegrass music and have written many songs influenced by it, but I had never really tried to write a straight-up Bluegrass song before. I really wanted to write something that had a very traditional sound. I was reading a book about the life of a woman in Appalachia in the 1910's-1920's. The hardships she had to endure not only just in such a difficult life and times, but additionally at the hands of men, were shocking to my modern sensibilities. I had the idea to write a song about someone from that time who lives they life they want to live on their own terms, someone who is born a woman, but lives their life as a man, only not in a modern context. What might that have looked like a hundred years ago?
